ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Rotarian.  Rotary International is an association of individual clubs, with each club operating autonomously. Membership is extremely important to us, and we are always eager to hear from individuals interested in our mission and in joining our club.

Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives. A Rotary club contains a diverse group of professional leaders from the community that the club serves.  Membership in a Rotary club offers a number of benefits, including:

  • effecting change within the community
  • advancing business and professional contacts
  • developing leadership skills
  • gaining an understanding of and having an impact on international humanitarian issues

Through Rotary International's service programs, a Rotary club can have a significant effect on the quality of life in its community. The programs of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International offer opportunities to form international partnerships that help people in need worldwide. Some 1.2  million Rotarians in over 30,000 clubs in over 160 countries make significant contributions to the quality of life at home and around the globe.

ROTARY CLUB OF DERBY

Information for New Members

The Rotary Club of Derby was chartered on January 13, 1981 and now has over 60 members. The club meets at noon every Friday at the Derby Golf & Country Club.  Several caterers provide food for the club lunches.  The club's primary activities include fellowship, informative and entertaining speakers, occasional service projects and providing financial support to local, national and international causes.

The club is governed by an eight-member board of directors which meets at noon on the second Tuesday of each month.  All members are welcome to attend these meetings.  Since the club's inception, 26 different people have served as its president.  The current president is Bill Smith.

The club dues are $150 per quarter.  This includes the cost of the weekly lunches, as well as a $25 donation to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, which finances many educational and humanitarian projects around the world, and a $10 donation to the club's local foundation, which provides college scholarships to graduating Derby High School seniors.  There is also a one-time initiation fee of $35.

Each member is occasionally responsible for providing a speaker for a club meeting (in alphabetic rotation); this gives every member an opportunity to influence the type of program presented.  Guidelines for speakers are provided to each new member.

Members are expected to attend at least 60% of the meetings in any club year (July 1 to June 30).  There are several clubs in the greater Wichita area where members can make up meetings, if necessary.  Meetings can also be made up on the internet.

To find out more about membership in the Rotary Club of Derby, click the "Prospective Contact" link in the left margin of this page and then complete and submit the form.  If you prefer, you may call Bill Smith, the club president, at 316 617 2383 or Keith Volz, the club secretary at 316 789-9193. Membership is by invitation only and you must be sponsored by an existing club member. Your application must be approved by the club board of directors before your membership becomes official.
